FINAL DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

This is the image of my double page spread now completed. I am happy with the outcome of this task. I have kepted the house style the same throughout all three tasks. I think that it is clearly laid out and easy to follow.

FINAL CONTENTS PAGE

This is my final contents page. I am pleased with the overall look and how the Brit theme is presented throughout the contents page. I haven't added much photos to the contents page as I only wanted to keep it to one photo and the rest text but I don't think I have over done it with the text.

FINAL FRONT COVER

This is my front cover of BASE magazine completed. Overall I think it is an improvement from my preliminary task as I used a lot more effects and tools to create this magazine cover.

Evidence of me using photoshop

This is evidence of me using photo shop. I asked a student from my class to take a photo of me using the software. This has been one of the main type of software I have used alongside with Blogger, Prezi and Microsoft PowerPoint.

QR Code

This is the imagae that I got off Google. With the advance range of technology I wanted to insert a QR code into my magazine.

I then opened it in photo shop and put it onto my double page spread.

This is the final image of the QR code on my double page spread. I have advertised it to show that it is a link to an unseen video. The audience will be able to see what happened behind the scenes of the Brits and exclusive information that no other magazine has coverage of.

Pictures on double page spread

After inserting the text onto the double page spread I then added in two photos; One of Jamie performing and one of the couple together. By looking at other double page spread it gave me an insigh on how to structure the layout and instead of it being all text, photo's break it up and is something for the reader's to look at aswell as reading.

The Interview

This is a screen shot of the interview on the double page spread. I have seperated the answers into blue and red. These are the main colours of the magazine but I also chose red for Kelsey as compared to blue, red is more associated to girls than boys. All Jamie's answers are in blue. I have chose to put the questions in the black text as I didn't want the questions to be mixed in with the answers. I have set it out in columns to keep it neat and it also allows me to add in photo's into the corners of the page.

Draft of the Interview for double page spread

So it’s your first exclusive interview together, how you feeling?

J: Slightly nervous, suppose I have to be nice. (they both laugh)

K: I’ve only ever done one interview on my own so it’s a different experience doing it together.

Was it love at first sight?

J: We met at one of my gigs, I had heard some of Kelsey’s songs before but we had never met. As soon as we got to know each other we just clicked.

K: Well, the confession I have is I attended the majority of Jamie’s gigs as I was attracted to him, I suppose I was like a little stalker (Kelsey laughs) we connected straight away. I’d definitely say that music brought us together.

With the relationship you had would you consider a duet?

J: Maybe in the near future it could be something to think about but at the moment we are keeping songs and performances separate.

K: I would never say no, we support each other in the work we do and add our own touches in but it just works better by keeping work and relationship separate. I would consider him being the supporting act at my tour, but we’ll see.

How was the experience of your first BRIT Awards?

J: Amazing, I have never experienced an atmosphere like it. Also being chosen to perform live at the BRITS was a dream come true.

K: I agree, it was one of the best nights I have experienced. Singing live was a great honour and I’m glad that both of us were privileged to get that experience.

With the tours coming up, what impact do you think it will have on the relationship?

J: I think it will be hard as it would be the longest time apart but it is something we both have to do.

K: It will definitely be a test but there are a few days that we are attending each other’s tour for support so there will be a few days of seeing each other. With technology these days we are able to stay in contact.

Continue the interview at: www.base.co.uk/kelseyjamie

This is the interview that will appear on my double page spread. I typed it out on Microsoft word so I was able to check each word for spelling mistakes or typing errors that I had made. Once I was happy with the interview and the structure I then copied and pasted it onto the double page spread itself. Once it transferred it over I was then able to change the colour and style of the writing to match the house style of my music magazine.

Start of Double Page Spread

Today I have started my double page spread. I have started of by adding the title of the article at the top left hand side of the spread. I have kept within my theme of the Brit Awards by using the colours red and blue with a white background. I have changed the colour of the names and what the article will include so it stands out to the reader and by reading a short introduction it informs them on what both Kelsey and Jamie will be talking about.

Changes to Contents Page

This is the layout that I had original created. After showing it to my teacher and a student from my class they suggested that I change the heading to Features so it enabled me to insert more articles to fill up a space on my contents page as it looked bare. Once I thought about it i did agree with them. As you can see from the image below I have changed the title and added more articles. I think this looks a lot better as it fills the gap and adds more articles.

Picture on contents page

This is the image I have chosen to use for my contents page. This links to sub heading that appears on my front cover of Justin Bieber hitting rock bottom. I have inserted the page number over the image so it catches the reader eye and they know what page to directly go to without having to scan through the contents page if this is the page the are most interested in.

Progression of contents

This is a screen shot to show the progression I am making on my contents page. I have started to create three sections on the contents page with sub-headings. The reason I am going to organise it into sections is so that the readers find it easy to navigate around and hopefully find it easy to look under the section they are the most interested in. I created the contents heading the same way as I created the masthead for the front cover by using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Location of Photos

I had two different location of photos as I wanted to make it easy for the people that were going to appear in my magazine. I used my own house and my friends house to take each photo. As I had already planned the backgrounds of the front cover, contents page, and double page spread I was able to take me photos on any background. By doing this it allowed me to get experience of using the different tools that allowed me to cut around the pictures and remove the background. For every photo I used the magnetic lasso tool and the rubber so the audience was unable to tell that I had removed it from a different background.

Contents Background

To create the background on the contents page I went to Google and got a picture of the Brit Award. I then saved it as a picture which then enabled me to open it in Photo shop.

Once I had opened the image in Photo shop I used the magnetic lasso tool. This enables me to go around the edges of the magazine and cut out the background.

This screen shot shows the outline that I have created to cut around. I also used the rubber tool to make the edges look more neater.

As you can see from the screen shot I have managed to get the Brit award on a white background by using the magnetic lasso tool and the rubber tool to get rid of the original background.

To fade the picture into the background I right clicked on the layer and then selected blending options.

I then clicked on the opacity figure which was 100%. I wanted to decrease this figure as it was making the image to bold. After experimenting with different levels of opacity I decided that 30% was the best to use for my contents page as it still allowed me to put writing over the top without it looking to much.

This is the result of changing the opacity level of the image and cutting away the unwanted background.

Photoshoot 2

The reason I done two photo shoots was because the people I wanted to use for my magazine were not free at the same time. I also used different scenery for each photo shoot and each person I used to photograph were unable to get to either locations.
This is my second photo shoot:

This is one of the pictures I have taken for my contents page. I am still not sure if this is the one I am going to use. My aim was to get a full body image which I have in this photo but I am not sure about phone being held in the hands and the posture body.

The lighting in this photo is not great, it looks very bright and white. It will not be in my choice of photos to use as I do not think it is the look I am going for. Even though I did not want eye contact with the camera I don't think this will be a photo that I will use but it is still good to have it as an option.

The aim of this image was to look like the celebrity was hiding away from the camera. I think that this pose looks to fake and I won't be using this in my magazine. My aim is to make my photos look as professional as I can.

With the headline for this celebrity being about rock bottom I think it ties in well. It gives the impression that he may be suffering or trying to hide away. This could be a possible choice for me to use on my contents page.

Out of the whole photo shoot this one is my favourite. It expresses a motion shot but isn't directing mainly onto the face and the eye contact is covered by the glasses. For the contents page I will be removing to background and putting it onto a white background.

Similar to the other photo this one also connects nicely to the headline about hitting rock bottom even though it doesn't give off much expression. I would definitely consider using this photo on my contents page. I will experiment by inserting each picture into the space that is allocated on the contents page for the photo and see which one fits the layout the most.

Adding Text Onto My Magazine

This screen shot is of the text icon that is found on Adobe photo shop. By clicking on this icon it allows me to draw a text box on any chosen area of my magazine. Once I have allocated the area I am then able to type into the box text of my choice.

As you can see on this screen shot it shows a colour chart and a smaller box for the font. The top box allows me to change the font style to a variety of different options that they provide. It also allows me to change the font size to as little or as big as I want to. The little T icons at the bottom of the box allows me to change the text to either bold, italic or underline particular text. It also has other options but I have not used these in my magazine. The larger box signifies the large amount of colours that I can choose from. By moving the arrows up and down the bar changes the bigger box to the different shades that are available to choose from. All of the text that I have entered into my magazine I have had to follow these steps each time.

Barcode

This is the bar code that I am going to use on my front cover. As I want to make it look professional this would be something that I need to include into the front cover as it is on all of the magazines that I have looked at. The following website link will locate you to the exact web page on where I located the bar code myself.
https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=barcode&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44158598,d.ZWU&biw=1280&bih=904&wrapid=tlif136395620568410&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=CVJMUda9HYqm0AWE2IGABg#imgrc=tXsjQaeYYv9SXM%3A%3BDGI7a73_P8e0MM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fnewspaper.li%252Fstatic%252Fd07651939efd1cb97240485eb2d5e98b.gif%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fnewspaper.li%252Fbarcode%252F%3B640%3B480

Brit Award Logo and Union Jack Flag Sources

For the front cover I have used this Brit award logo that I located on Google to create the background. The theme of my magazine is the Brit awards so I decided that this would enhance the look and theme for what I wanted.
This is the web address as to where I located the logo from:

This is another source that I found on the Internet that I used for my masthead. I enabled me to change the style of my writing so it had the effect of the union jack going through each letter and also resembled Britain which links into my theme nicely.
The following link will direct you to where I located the union jack flag from:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&biw=1366&bih=622&q=brit+award+2012&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44342787,d.d2k&wrapid=tlif136441716564110&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=llpTUeVFss_QBYaGgaAL#um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=union+jack+&oq=union+jack+&gs_l=img.3..0l10.23969.23969.7.24405.1.1.0.0.0.0.111.111.0j1.1.0...0.0...1c.1.7.img.fjClNCx5xRQ&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44342787,d.d2k&fp=f34fbe06ab1afcfa&biw=1366&bih=622&imgrc=7EkcjEktQOf4DM%3A%3B9DA_vfQ4lBWqoM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.brightonandhovebusiness.co.uk%252Fwp-content%252Fuploads%252Funion-jack.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.brightonandhovebusiness.co.uk%252Fhome%252Fattachment%252Funion-jack%252F%3B689%3B388

Photoshoot 1

This is the first photo shoot that I carried out.

This is the photo that I am going to be using on my front cover. The reason I have chose this picture as my main double page spread is going to be on these two people. I have taken a medium/long shot of the couple as I didn't want head shots as my main picture. It allows me to show most of the body and is a clear image for the audience to see. However the surrounding background of the image I do not like so I will be using the magnetic lasso tool to cut the two main people out of the photo and move the picture onto my background that I have created.

This is an image that I am going to be using on my double page spread, I really like this photo as it shows the act performing, I also like the fact that it is an action shot and they are not looking directly into the camera.

This photo I was considering using on my contents page but I have decided not to. Personally I think the person is to far away from the camera and it doesn't give great detail of the person. I am aiming to get better photos on my second photo shoot that I am able to use for my contents page as this one is not satisfactory.

This is another photo that I have chosen to use on my double page spread. Similar to the other photo I also do not like the surroundings of the place of where I have taken this place but I know that it will be easy for me remove the background and change it by using photo shop.

Creating The Masthead

The theme of my magazine is the BRIT Awards as it is a special edition just for the Brits. For the masthead I want the union jack flag in the title. To do this I had to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create the effect I wanted. As you can see from the screen shot below I typed in the word Base in capital letters. I then selected the font arial black as that was the font I wanted to use.

I then highlighted the whole text and selected Format Text Effects.

Once the selection box came up I selected Picture fill. It then allowed me to select a picture off of my documents. I had already saved the union jack flag picture off Google. Once selected I pressed insert.

As you can see from this screen shot it as insert the union jack into the letters. It has created the look I wanted. However I had created it on Microsoft PowerPoint so I needed to transfer it over to photo shop. To do this I saved the picture as a JPEG file so it would allow me to open it in photo shop.

This is the final screen shot showing the BASE in union jack effect on the front cover of my magazine. I managed to successfully save it as a picture and transfer it over to photo shop which is the software I am using to create me magazine.

Front Cover Background

After copying and pasting the logos multiple of  times I finally created my background. I used the opacity tool to fade the logos and the transform controls to enlarge and decrease each logo's. The reason I have left the top of the page empty is so it allows me space to insert my masthead. I experimented filling the whole page with the Brit award logos but when I inserted the masthead I found that it was very unclear as you were able to see the black logo in the background and through the gaps of the lettering. I came to the decision to make it clear and only have two thirds of the background covered so the masthead was able to stand out on its own.

Using The Opacity Option

This screen shot shows the final step. I have successfully changed the opacity and faded the logos into the background which created the look I wanted.
To make the logo fade into the background I right clicked on the layer and selected blending options. Once this boxed appeared I then went to the opacity box and decreased it to 30%. Once I had selected chosen the right percentage I then pressed OK. I repeated this step a number of times as I wanted each logo to have the same look to make it look more professional as each logo that is on the background of my front cover is separate

As I wanted my background colour to represent the screen from the BRIT Awards I copy and pasted the logo onto photo shop and made some bigger and smaller to add variety to the different shapes and sizes to make it more realistic. As you can see by the screen shot the BRIT award logo is still bold.

Draft of Contents Page

Here is my hand drawn draft for my contents page. Like my front cover I want to maintain the BRIT Award theme and have the same style putting the union jack in the letters to spell contents. I want to keep the house style and colours the same so my audience find it easy to recognise my magazine. I am going to have three sections on the contents page; Front Cover Stories, Fashion and Competitions and Offers. Instead of using normal bullet points I want use the BRIT Award and make it smaller like a bullet point. The colour of my text is going to carry on being red and blue. As one of my stories on the front cover is on Justin Bieber, my contents page is going to have a picture relating to this story. The background will be a large BRIT award faded into the background so it allows me to put writing over the top and it still be visible for the readers.

Music Magazine Front Cover Draft

This is the picture of my draft that I have sketched by hand. It is a rough draft of what I aim my magazine to look like. The name of my music magazine is going to be BASE. As I was struggling to think of name for my magazine I gathered ideas from a few media students from my class. Once I decided to call it BASE I want the theme of the magazine to be the BRIT Awards. As an idea from my media teacher I want to try and find a way of having the union jack flag through the lettering of the title. My main double page spread is going to be on the new upcoming artists Kelsey and Jamie at the BRIT Awards so they are going to be my main picture on the front cover. I am going to use the BRIT Award logo for the background so I can create a screen to make it look like the photo was taken at the BRIT Awards. The first of the magazine is going to contain mini headlines of stories that will also appear in the magazine and a offer that may also entice the reader to the magazine as well. Adding the bar code and date and issue date is to make it look professional.

Music Magazine Task

I am now looking at a variety of different music magazines with the genre pop/rock. I want to analyse a front cover and a contents page so it enables me to gather a few ideas and techniques that I can use on my magazine. The magazine that I have decided to look at is Q magazine.

This is the front cover I am going to analyse.

Preliminary Task Contents Page

This is my final contents page for the preliminary task. I have kept the main housestyle of the dark red background and yellow writing to allow the reader to clearly recognize that this magazine is representing the school. Overall, I am happy with how it looks as this is my preliminary task and my first experience of using Adobe Photoshop. It has given insight into the different tools that it supplies allowing me to go on and use these in my main task.

Front Cover School Magazine

This is my final front cover for the preliminary task. I have followed my plan closely but instead of putting three photos down the first third of the magazine I have changed it to two so it does not look so crammed up. I have kept to my house style with the colours and style of the layout. I have included the school logo into the magazine. The reason I chose the colours I have was to keep the same style as St Marks itself as it is a magazine for the school. I have used an Ofsted quote on the front cover to catch the readers eye, mainly the parents as they are the more likely audience to be interested in the Ofsted of their child's school. I have also included a chance for the students to win school stationary for the year, this may grab the children to read more about their school if they know that there is a chance for them to win a competition. the newly appointed head girl and head boy are my main article as it informs not only the parents and pupils but also the local community surrounding the school. It also informs the school pupils of the image of each head boy and head girl if they have not noticed them around school. I have used a mixture of text and images to make it visual as well as some information.
